On Monday night, I attended an event that promised to explore whether Australian society has become more divided. Comparisons to the USA naturally arose, as the political commentators on the panel drew on their firsthand experiences covering recent US elections. Yet, what stood out to me was not the polarisation I expected but the thoughtful, reasoned perspectives shared by the speakers.
Instead of amplifying discord or focusing on division, the panelists demonstrated a remarkable willingness to listen—to one another and the audience. They sought common ground, engaged in deep listening, and showed a shared commitment to fairness and cohesive solutions.
Initially, I went with the mindset of wanting to "fix" the problem of societal division. But as the evening unfolded, I realised that I, too, am part of the problem. Too often, I avoid engaging with perspectives different from my own and fail to seek out a fuller understanding of complex issues.
At the end of the night, when the speakers were asked to offer one simple solution, Waleed Aly’s response struck a chord. He said, “Think of what you believe in. Then go and seek out someone you know who holds a different perspective. Talk with them, find out what it is that causes them to think the way they do. Seek out the common humanity you both share.”
This idea challenges me to reflect on how I interact with others. It also ties deeply to the call of Christ, as Bill Gillard reminds us in his editorial this week. Christ calls us to go beyond Bethlehem—to create communities where all are welcomed, uplifted, and united by shared humanity and love.
So, I leave you with this challenge: Think of a belief or issue you hold dear, and then intentionally seek out someone with a different perspective. Sit down with them, listen with an open heart, and explore the shared humanity that unites you. As you embark on this journey, pray to be guided by God’s presence, allowing God’s wisdom and love to shape your steps toward understanding, unity, peace and goodwill to all.
